Types of Golfers — Which One Are You?
I’ve come to realise there’s no single kind of golfer.
Some of us play every week, others once a month (or once a summer). Some love the structure of a club, others the freedom of exploring new courses. Some grind on the range, others just want a good walk and a few solid shots.
Here are a few types I’ve noticed — see if any sound familiar:
The Club Member
The course feels like home. You know the regulars, the staff, and probably your way around the locker room fridge.
The Visitor or Green Fee Golfer
You love trying new courses and seeing how different every round can feel. Variety keeps the game interesting.
The Society Golfer
Golf and laughter go hand in hand. You play with a group, travel together, and collect memories (and maybe a few wooden spoons).
The Casual Golfer
A handful of rounds a year, mostly in good weather. It’s not about performance — it’s about switching off for a few hours.
The Solo Warrior
You’re happy playing alone. It’s peaceful. You get into a rhythm and play at your own pace.
The Social Golfer
You play for the company, not the score. The best shots are usually followed by a story, not a fist pump.
The Fairweather Golfer
You check the forecast before the tee sheet. Sunshine equals golf; rain equals coffee.
The Enthusiast
You’re out there no matter what. Waterproofs on, smile intact, wind or no wind.
The Range Warrior
You’ve got the swing videos, the training aids, and a goal in mind. You’re working on something — always.
The Sim Golfer
Life’s busy, but the love’s still there. A screen and a mat will do until time or daylight allows for more.
The thing is, finding people who match how you play isn’t easy.
Friends move, schedules clash, and some courses seem impossible to get onto unless you’re a member. Fully public courses exist, but not many.
And that’s part of why I’ve been thinking a lot about accessibility — how hard it can be to actually play this game we love.
If we want more people to take up golf, we need to make it simpler: easier to find time, easier to find places to play, easier to meet others at the same stage. Maybe even rethink what “playing golf” really looks like — because not every round has to start on a first tee.
So, which golfer are you right now? And what would make it easier for you — or someone new — to just swing?
